Markets Update:
Asian shares mixed on Monday, with markets in Europe poised to track their gains, after strong U.S. first-quarter economic growth and data showing profits at Chinese industrial firms grew for the first time in four months. Still nagged by uncertainty over the outlook for the global economy, investors were awaiting a meeting of the U.S. Federal Reserve this week and Chinese factory data for further clues on policy direction in the world’s biggest economies.
Mainland Chinese shares were mostly lower by the morning session’s end, with the Shanghai composite 0.8% lower and the Shenzhen component dropping more than 1.8%. Mainland Chinese markets stumbled to their worst weekly performance since October last week, with the Shanghai composite dropping more than 5.5%.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index advanced 0.8%. In South Korea, the Kospi added 1%, with shares of industry heavyweight Samsung Electronics jumping more than 2% ahead of its earnings release on Tuesday. The ASX 200 in Australia, on the other hand, slipped 0.4% as the sectors mostly traded lower.
The U.S. dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of its peers, was at 97.972 after touching highs above 98.1 last week. The Japanese yen traded at 111.59 against the dollar after touching lows beyond 112.2 in the previous trading week. The Australian dollar changed hands at $0.7057 after slipping from highs above $0.714 last week.
Oil prices declined in the afternoon of Asian trading hours, with the international benchmark Brent crude futures contract slipping 0.5%
