Markets Update:

Asian stock markets are mostly lower on Monday following the negative cues from Wall Street on Friday amid worries about U.S.-China trade tensions after White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow downplayed hopes of an imminent trade deal. In addition, upbeat U.S. jobs data for the month of October led to renewed concerns about the outlook for interest rates.

Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping tried to position China as a globalization champion in a major speech. Xi's opening speech kicked off the week-long China International Import Expo that seeks to promote the world's second largest economy as a major consumer of global goods. That said, Chinese shares traded down:

The Shanghai composite declined 0.8 percent while the Shenzhen composite traded down 0.67 percent. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index fell 2.3 percent. Australia's ASX 200 struggled for gains, trading down 0.53 percent as most sectors declined. The energy sector was off 1.38 percent as oil stocks mostly sold off.

The U.S. dollar struggled to hold gains made on Friday following the upbeat jobs data. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of major currencies, was last off 0.1 percent at 96.459. In commodities, oil prices fell as the start to U.S. sanctions against Iran's fuel exports was softened by waivers that will allow some countries to still import Iranian crude, at least temporarily.
